CBD and Skincare: Everything You Need To Know

CBD is everywhere and getting more known every day for its growing list of health and wellness benefits. From anxiety and stress to pain relief and sleep, CBD has a hand in everything. So, it should come as no surprise that CBD and skincare go hand in hand as well.

Now you can find CBD night creams, serums, body lotions, moisturizers, facial masks, lip balms, and so much more, many of which with hefty promises. But how do you know what’s real and what isn’t? And what can CBD do for your skin anyway?

Here’s everything you need to know about CBD and why you need to add it to your skincare routine yesterday.

What is CBD anyway?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound found in the hemp plant. Hemp is abundant in CBD and cannot get you high or alter your senses, unlike its cousin, the marijuana plant that has high amounts of THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, the intoxicating compound that weed is known for.

Cannabinol is a big deal because of the way it interacts with the body, particularly the endocannabinoid system or ECS. Whether you consume cannabis or not, everyone has an endocannabinoid system, which is comprised of endocannabinoids, enzymes, and receptors. This system is responsible for a variety of functions including mood, pain, energy, metabolism, sleep, memory, stress, reproduction, sensation, and more. Basically, a lot.

Using CBD on your skin allows it to absorb and work with receptors in the endocannabinoid system to trigger positive outcomes like elevated mood, reduced stress, pain relief, and a number of other reactions that CBD has become known for.

Is CBD even legal?

Because CBD is shifting the cannabis conversation to the mainstream, questions come up about whether or not CBD is even legal.

Firstly, yes, CBD is legal in all 50 states in the United States. Changes introduced in the 2018 Farm Bill made it so that CBD derived from hemp with a THC content of no more than 0.3% is legal for production and use. Anything above 0.3% THC is considered non-hemp cannabis, or marijuana, and subject to federal punishment.

States like California and Colorado where marijuana is legal are allowed to use CBD derived from the marijuana plant and can have blended skincare products that are in ratios like 1:1, 1:3, etc. For everyone else selling CBD in states where only CBD is legal, only hemp-derived CBD-based products with 0.3% or less THC is permitted.

CBD benefits for your skin

Calms acne-prone skin.

Research has shown that acne is caused by inflammation. CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and helps combat acne, reduces redness, and can help prevent breakouts. The calming effects of CBD can help alleviate pain and leave your skin looking and feeling better.

Rich in antioxidants.

Similar to vitamins A, C, and E, CBD is loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals and environmental pollutants like UV rays, pollution, stress, that break down the skin and cause fine lines and wrinkles. Using CBD creams or oil on your skin can lessen the appearance of lines and wrinkles and leave your skin glowing.

Soothes sensitive skin.

Because of CBD’s anti-inflammatory and relieving properties, it can soothe irritated, red, or sensitive skin. Even for those without severe or serious pain issues, using CBD on your skin regularly can enhance your natural glow and have your skin in optimal health.

Clears and balances your skin.

Using CBD on your skin can help improve and soothe your skin’s complexion. CBD is said to absorb excess oils on the skin and helps promote hydration where you need it. This leaves your skin feeling supple and moisturized.

Relieves pain.

Using CBD cream or oil on your full body has benefits beyond damn good looking skin. Regular use supports pain relief as CBD can penetrate the skin and interact with endocannabinoids when used topically.
