CBD for Hair, Skin and Nails

Everyone is talking about CBD right now. What is it? What does it do? Is it really marijuana? Does it get me high?

All great questions. We breakdown the Beauty of CBD! (repost from Regenifi)

When I started taking CBD a couple months ago, I had NO IDEA the beauty benefits of this powerful cannabinoid. I mean, I knew it was supposed to help with things like anxiety, depression, chronic inflammation, epilepsy and more. But what I didn’t know is how much this cannabinoid would clear up my skin, strengthen my hair and leave my nails looking fabulous. I went from battling with hormonal acne (to the point where I stopped taking photos of myself because I couldn’t stand how horrible my skin looked) to glowing, clear skin. I’m not chalking it all up to the CBD, but it definitely helped. Not only does my skin look great, but I feel great all-around. Better moods, more energy, weight loss and less anxiety throughout the day have made a huge difference for me these past few months.

So much so, I’m here to regale all of the benefits of CBD for your skin, hair and nails! CBD is a serious game-changer…

First Things First: What is CBD?

Cannabidiol CBD molecule

Cannabidiol, abbreviated as CBD, is a molecule found in the Cannabis family of plants, including the marijuana plant and the hemp plant. CBD is just one cannabinoid in these plants; there are over 80 known cannabinoids that act as “keys” in the human body, waking up and activating receptors known as the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS), or endocannabinoid system. This system regulates the body’s homeostasis, or state of balance. It plays a vital role in the following body functions:

  • Appetite
  • Sleep
  • Mood
  • Pain
  • Immune System Response
  • Hormones

Just to be clear: although CBD is a cousin of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound in weed that produces psychoactive effects, it does not get you high or alter your state of mind at all. CBD actually counteracts the effects of THC, calming the body and mind. CBD is not all of that hippie-dippie, flower power garbage – it is a natural and effective way of easing daily maladies and even some chronic conditions, backed by science.

Although research is scant now, there will be many more studies on the effects of CBD in a range of areas in the coming years since the 2018 Farm Bill just made hemp cultivation and growth legal federally. However, there isn’t any shortage of testimonies availing the benefits of CBD for your hair, skin and nails.

With a growing line of CBD-infused beauty products, there will be more CBD beauty products available in the coming years. There is already a slew of shampoos, lotions, balms, serums and oils for a reason – this stuff really works!

Personally, CBD products have worked wonders for my skin, but I can’t say the same for anyone else (just a little disclaimer before I get into things!).

General Benefits of Taking CBD

CBD is a proven antioxidizing, anti-inflammatory compound, rich in fatty acids and vitamins/minerals. Some of its benefits include:

As I mentioned before, there’s definitive evidence showing CBD reduces inflammation and pain when applied topically. However, the science behind its skin care benefits isn’t crystal clear, though CBD is a great source of antioxidants and amino acids.

“There’s a 2014 study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation that showed promising results for using CBD to treat acne,” cosmetic dermatologist Shereene Idriss, M.D. told Glamour.

She goes on: “Generally CBD is well tolerated by all skin types, but be sure to look for it in products that best suit your skin type.” CBD doesn’t cause irritation – it scores a rating of 0 out of 5 on the comedogenic scale – meaning it won’t clog your pores. However, another ingredient in the product could. “Just as you would with any new product, start ones containing CBD with caution and stop using it if you develop a negative reaction,” Idriss advises.

The antioxidizing, anti-inflammatory properties in CBD balance and bring moisture back to your skin, hair and nails. Its analgesic (pain-killing) properties make it great for sore muscles, body aches/pains, menstrual cramps and stress relief, among many other benefits. CBD not only helps you look good, it makes you feel really good, too. Think of it as a healthy daily supplement. It makes a great addition to your overall beauty and health routine.

Naturally, our bodies make a cannabis-like chemical called anandamide, or the bliss molecule (runner’s high). “CBD naturally elevates the levels of your own endocannabinoid,” Michele Ross, the founder of the IMPACT Network, told Allure. “Increasing anandamide in your body and brain has anti-inflammatory effects, but it also has other activities at other receptors.” This is still being worked out in the lab. Most of the media attention comes from CBD’s use in effectively controlling two types of treatment-resistant epilepsy. But as I mentioned before, the list of benefits is endless.

Are you thinking right about now, “If CBD is so great for your skin, hair and nails, why haven’t I heard about it very much?” For starters, the 2018 Farm Bill that just passed recently legalizes hemp cultivation as the federal level. Prior to this, hemp was grown solely for research purposes in certain labs, as allowed by the 2014 Agricultural Act.

If you take CBD orally, like a tincture or edible, it enters the bloodstream like a Tylenol pill does and activates the body’s various endocannabinoid receptors. However, if you apply CBD topically to your skin, it has a localized effect on the applied area only. “It’s unlikely to penetrate deep enough to get into the bloodstream, and it tends to accumulate in the upper skin layers,” said Bonni Goldstein, a LA physician and Weedmaps’ medical adviser. Some believe the CBD stored in the upper skin layers provides longer-term relief.

“Inflammation is the root of all evil, whether that’s acne or the signs of aging,” says NYC dermatologist Dendy Engelman. Although acne rates are increasing, there aren’t many new treatment options to match demand. “Most often, they’re reformulating benzoyl peroxide, or a retinoid, or some kind of acid,” she stated to Allure.

For those who don’t want/can’t use pain pills, topical CBD reduces swelling and pain in applied areas. This makes it a popular ingredient for rubs and salves, used for everything from achy joints to a Bengay alternative. These same properties make CBD oil an amazing massage oil as well. Mmmm…

Scientists are finding more evidence that CBD can help with skin disorders like dry skin, psoriasis and eczema. This ingredient is popping up in face creams, serums and body lotions for good reason. CBD also helps fight acne. Seriously!

CBD Helps with Acne

When I started taking CBD, I never expected it to really do much for me, let alone help with my hormonal breakouts. But when my acne started clearing up, I knew it had something to do with the CBD.

When it comes to fighting acne, there’s a lot involved: blocked pores, excess sebum, inflammation and the proliferation of bacteria. However, a 2014 study found CBD helps suppress breakouts by regulating oil production by the sebaceous glands. This is great news if you’ve got acne and want to avoid harsh drugs with horrifying side effects. Of course, more research still needs to be done, but dermatologists are intrigued by the potential of a natural, non-steroidal tool. If CBD controls inflammation and oil production, it’s treating two parts of acne formation. That’s a huge deal since “currently, we’ve been doing that with retinoids,” said Dendy Engelman. Retinoids make skin worse before it gets better. They induce more inflammation in the form of redness, dryness and peeling as skin gets used to the treatment. This process is called retinization. Sound lovely? Not really.

CBD for Skin Care

Above, I’ve mentioned the various benefits of CBD for skin care. Let’s do a little recap right now. Some specific benefits of CBD for your skin include:

  • Less acne/breakouts
  • Reduce signs of aging
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Moisturizes, regenerates and smoothes
  • Antioxidizing, reduces free-radical damage
  • Prevents UV damage

Even without CBD, hemp seed oil (the base for many CBD oils) is rich in vitamin C. The fatty acids in the oil alleviates skin problem like dryness and age-related issues. Its various skin care benefits include:

  • Boosts skin elasticity
  • Stimulates collagen synthesis
  • Smoothes fine lines and wrinkles
  • Glowing skin

As I mentioned earlier, CBD is non-comedogenic, scoring a 0 out of 5 rating on the scale. It will not clog your pores and works on all skin types! This little ingredient might just be the next breakout product in the skin care industry; time will tell.

CBD for Hair Care

I know I’ve been talking a lot about how great CBD is for your skin, but it’s also amazing for your hair! Naturally, CBD oil contains a good amount of vitamins – A, D and E – and essential fatty acids:

  • Zinc
  • Vitamin-E
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphate

Using CBD on your hair, adding CBD oil to your hair products or using CBD-infused products will:

  • Prevents hair damage/split ends
  • Improves shine
  • Softer and easier to brush
  • Improves hair color/vibrance
  • Could help fight grey hairs

In addition to the natural omega-3 fatty acids in CBD oil, zinc is one of the most important minerals for healthy hair. CBD-infused hair products and oil are rich in zinc, which strengthens hair follicles and helps prevent hair loss.

Why Should I Use a CBD-infused Shampoo?

Adding CBD oil to your shampoo, or using a CBD-infused shampoo, has benefits that include:

  • Strengthens hair and prevents breakage
  • Increases keratin creation for strong and healthy hair
  • Reverse hair loss cause by iron deficiency (one of the most common causes of hair loss for women)
  • Moisturizes scalp and hair naturally, without feeling greasy or sticky
  • Stimulates hair growth (rich in fatty acids)
  • Strengthens hair follicles (improves blood circulation on scalp

CBD for Nails

We’ve covered skin, we’ve covered hair, all that’s left is nails! For much of the same reasons CBD benefits skin and hair, it also creates a relaxing experience when added to your nail care routine. Add it to your hand lotion, or take it orally to reap its benefits.

Elizabeth Garcia, owner of The Nail Room located in Queens, offers a CBD oil nail service for her customers after her own success with using CBD to help with her postpartum depression. She said, “Once I tried it and started to do more research, I realized people were using it in their cocktails, in their coffee, and I knew I could offer this.” Her CBD oil massage service has an added level of balance and relaxation to it, a unique, quality experience for all her customers. Talking about upping the ante during your next manicure!
