Go The F*ck To Sleep: CBD, Melatonin and Sleeping Beauty

Given the current state of affairs and the fact that we are constantly stressed out from a global pandemic, civil unrest, and not really knowing what the future has in store for us, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Americans aren’t getting enough sleep.

Prior to COVID-19, our sleep numbers weren’t looking too hot. According to recent research, more than one-third (35.6%) of working adults in the United States got inadequate sleep, or fewer than seven hours, in 2018. Those numbers were expected to grow, and the series of shocking events in 2020 have made that all but certain.

The effects of lack of sleep are well known yet worth repeating as it seems negligible but can have dire consequences. For instance, not getting enough shut-eye can lead to drowsiness and lack of focus throughout the day, leading to issues like low productivity, stress, and distracted or sleep-driving. And, rather timely because COVID, not getting enough sleep means your body will not be able to heal and strengthen your immune system, leaving you susceptible to contracting the coronavirus.

While CBD won’t necessarily knock you out like marijuana can, it has a number of health benefits that can help you not only get a better night’s sleep but help you stay asleep and wake up feeling refreshed the next morning.

How cannabidiol (CBD) works in the body.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a psychoactive compound that’s extracted from cannabis. Of the two main cannabis plants, hemp and marijuana, the hemp plant has high amounts of CBD and only trace amounts (0.3% or less) of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound that makes users feel high. The hemp plant is where most high-quality CBD is extracted from.

CBD works by interacting with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) to provide a number of benefits including elevating the mind’s mood, lowering blood pressure, and fighting inflammation. It’s for these reasons that CBD is being included in treatment plans for diseases and disorders including anxiety, epilepsy, and even cancer.

THC is a similar compound that provides similar benefits for similar ailments as well. The difference, however, is in how they engage the ECS. THC binds with receptors in the brain that alter mood, pain, and other feelings. CBD binds very weakly, if at all to those same receptors, but works with other elements in the body that are linked to well-being

How does melatonin work?

Unlike CBD, melatonin is a type of hormone that is produced and secreted by the pineal gland in the human body and helps regulate the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Basically, melatonin tells your body to start getting ready for bed.

Melatonin levels are low or virtually nonexistent during the daytime but begin to increase during the evening and stay high until the following morning.

This is why melatonin is a helpful supplement if you’re experiencing jetlag after a long flight, insomnia, or your natural sleep rhythm is disrupted due to working late or overnight shifts. Melatonin signals to your body that it’s bedtime.

It’s important to note that when you take melatonin is a factor in how you will feel the following morning. The recommendation is taking melatonin no more than 90 minutes before you go to sleep. Taking melatonin at 2:30 am because you can’t fall asleep is a recipe for disaster and can lead to a very groggy morning and an unproductive day.

CBD + Melatonin

CBD and melatonin products have been climbing in popularity and piquing the interest especially in the middle of a pandemic when many are stressed, experiencing anxiety, or sleeping less than they’re used to. While melatonin is an old player to the sleep game, adding CBD to the mix, considering how it can help you fall asleep, is logical

Both CBD and melatonin are considered endogenous, meaning they’re produced, processed, and used by the body as part of natural, physiological processes. When taken in tandem, CBD and melatonin work synergistically and can improve or restore your natural sleep patterns.

While melatonin tells the body that it’s time to get ready for sleep, CBD restores calm and essentially sets the stage to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. CBD can also improve symptoms that may inhibit sleep, including stress, anxiety, and even pain.
