Did you know that cannabinoids, terpenes, and other cannabis compounds have enhanced effects when they work together? Learn more about what the entourage effect is and how to achieve it for yourself.
It’s hard to see anything about CBD without coming across the entourage effect, and for good reason. We know have heard about terpenes, cannabinoids, and other compounds being found in cannabis plants. But how do they respond when they’re all hanging out together?
Before we dive into the entourage effect and how to achieve it, it’s important to know the players that make such a phenomenon even possible to achieve.
Compounds Found In The Cannabis Plant
Cannabinoids are compounds naturally found in the hemp plant that are responsible for the benefits you experience when you take CBD. That includes managing anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, improving mood, and maintaining optimal health.
Even though CBD and THC are the most popular and researched, there are over 100 identified cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Examples of cannabinoids:
- Cannabidiol (CBD)
- Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
- Cannabinol (CBN)
- Cannabigerol (CBG)
- Cannabichromene (CBC)
- Cannabicitran (CBT)
Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are responsible for the distinct taste and smell of not just cannabis but all plants. They’re already popular in the wellness space as terpenes form the basis of aromatherapy.
Like cannabinoids, there have been over 100 cannabis terpenes identified, each yielding unique aromatics. Their differences may also be key as to why some strains of cannabis have different reactions compared to others.
Within cannabis, terpenes have therapeutic effects of their own. Terpenes, along with cannabinoids, kill pathogens within the body and improve blood flow. When these two compounds along with other compounds found in the hemp plant interact with each other, they produce what is known as the entourage effect.
The Entourage Effect: Everything You Need To Know
What is the entourage effect?
The entourage effect is the synergy achieved when all the compounds of the hemp plant interact with one another to produce an optimal effect or result. Compounds in CBD can amplify some potential benefits while muting or lessening possible side effects.
Full-spectrum entourage effect
Full-spectrum CBD is created using the entire plant and contains all the chemicals and compounds that are naturally found in the hemp plant, including THC.
Legally, all 50 states are allowed to carry full-spectrum CBD that has less than 0.3% THC. Although that’s a small amount compared to some of the other compounds, this can lead to false positives on drug tests, especially if you’re using it daily and the THC builds up over time.
Thankfully, there’s broad-spectrum CBD.
Broad-spectrum entourage effect
Broad-spectrum CBD is similar to full-spectrum CBD in terms of the way its produced and its makeup. It contains all the compounds found in the hemp plant with one major exception. After the oil is extracted, it’s further processed to remove all traces of THC, making it a great choice for athletes and other professionals who are drug tested as well as people who may experience sensitivities or adverse reactions to THC.
Even in the absence of THC, broad-spectrum CBD contains multiple cannabinoids such as CBN (cannabinol; natural sedative), CBG (cannabigerol; helps regulate health functions like mood and appetite), and CBC (cannabichromene; anti-inflammatory). Therefore, it’s still able to produce an entourage effect.
How To Experience The Entourage Effect
The easiest way to experience the entourage effect is by using broad-spectrum CBD or full-spectrum CBD. Both types of CBD are extracted using the entire plant to retain all naturally occurring compounds.
Full-spectrum contains 0.3% THC or less, which interacts with other compounds in the full-spectrum entourage effect. Broad-spectrum CBD is further processed to ensure the resulting oil is a THC-free oil.
